How To Build A Trellis Step #1 – You are going to want to cut and size all of your frame pieces for the trellis and to cut it and prepare it to be mounted into the frame. Before we can get deep into building a trellis you’ll be proud of, we must first understand some basics about measuring and cutting the panels and frames that will be needed for the trellis.

You’ll always want to make sure that you properly measure the distance from the ground to any windows or architectural features that might come into contact with the trellis or that might have its view blocked. So measure and cut all of the pieces proportionate to your house and always double check all measurements you do before cutting. You can always go back and take a new measurement but you can’t fix an over cut board, and while it is true you can get a new board, that can end up being costly after too many mistakes.

You’ll want to size up and measure the notches for your trellis and remember to smoothly cut them so that the frames will all fit together.

How To Build A Trellis Step #2 – Build three panels for your trellis and you will combine them into one when they are finished.

Hopefully you have measured the notches right in your frame work and have properly taken all measurements because now you are going to attach the panels together. Learning how to build a trellis might take quite a few pieces of extra wood if this is your first time doing something like this. You shouldn’t be angry with yourself if you measure wrong or make a cut somewhere you shouldn’t have. Remember to always drill sideways into the upper corner of the frame so that it’s holding both pieces of board together when building a trellis.

This part is important. The lattice needs to fit firmly in the frame and have some wiggle room but needs to not be too tight. The next essential step would to be to attach the lattice to a frame. Aside from learning how to build a trellis, you must also have some fundamentals in construction and placing wood pieces together.

How To Build A Trellis Step #3 – You will dig holes that are not too deep but deep enough that you can set your trellis in where it will remain secure. Place the trellis into the holes and double check to make sure that it’s in a secure location and will not be knocked over.

An important step in learning how to build a trellis is making sure you position your holes at least one to two feet away from the house. If you don’t, you will find that the plants will attach their selves to the side of your house when they grow. In addition for preventing measures against flowers growing on the side of your house, planting the trellis two feet away from your house allows for you to have easy access to maintenance on the trellis. Learning how to build a trellis requires a great deal of patience and devotion. The last and final step in trellis building would be to setup and install the built trellis in the holes you have dug.
